I was shocked to hear of Dave's passing. I was close friends with Dave long ago, when we both lived in the Redondo Beach area. We spent many enjoyable times together - hiking, dinners, outdoor excursions, and especially, running. Dave hosted my bachelor party at his house, where he had many poker tables going, full of running and work buddies. The funniest birthday card I ever received came from Dave - I won't recount what it said - I think I still have it somewhere.
I was honored to be part of Dave and Helene's wedding in El Paso. It was a fantastic time, and a treasured memory, including the A/C failure and all.
I regret having largely lost touch with Dave in recent years. It seems there will always be tomorrow to catch up......but not so. It just seems not that long ago when we hung out together.
My heart goes out to Helene, Benjamin and Elliot, who lost a great husband and father too soon. I feel glad however that I was blessed to have Dave as a friend and that Dave lived life to the fullest through his last day on Earth. I am confident that he is in a better place. But I will miss him.

I am deeply saddened to learn of David’s passing. David and I were appointed to the Lone Tree Recreation Advisory Committee at the same time and very much enjoyed his passion for recreation, especially cycling, and his leadership on the committee. He took a lead role in getting Lone Tree’s “Bike To Work Day” off the ground and running. I will miss seeing David on his bike in the neighborhood and at the recreation center. Rest In Peace my friend..

I remember Dave's friendship and professional accomplishments from his days at TRW in Space Park. Although we crossed paths infrequently after the family moved to Colorado, whenever we did, the friendship was immediately rekindled and it was always great to do so.
With condolences and sympathy for your loss,

Dave was influential on me and my career and he will be missed. He was a strong engineer, a good man and always had a smile on his face and something positive to say. I know I am better because we had the chance to work together.

Dave was such an outstanding person. He took a lot of joy in everything, from his family, to cycling, work, music, and poker. One of the things I remember him getting a kick out of was being able to combine cycling and poker when he designed his BARGE chip set. We used the chips when he hosted poker night for years. He was always introducing us to new music, too.
I am shocked and saddened that he is gone. There isn’t really anything adequate to say.
My condolences to Helene, Benjamin, Elliot, and the rest of his family. This is such a loss.

David was a friend of mine for 42 years. I met him in 1981 - he was the organizer of an event for the TRW (Redondo Beach, CA) track club and I was an avid runner. We started to hang out and train together. We were of similar capabilities and developed an intense, but good natured rivalry. He always seem to beat me by a little bit in races, but he brought out the best in me.
We actually worked together at TRW as well as ran together. And stayed friends. My sister-in-law introduced David to Helene who became his wife. I went to his wedding in El Paso, TX in 1987. And he was at my wedding at my brother's house in Agoura Hills, CA in 1989.
David moved to Denver in the 1990s for better career opportunities with TRW while I stayed with TRW in southern California. But we stayed in touch. Sometimes his business took him out to southern California, and sometimes my business took me out to Denver. Some of these trips involved us working together still. Even when not traveling, we stayed in touch.
Eventually David moved on to cycling. At first I didn't really understand - running seemed better. But even before hip replacements in 2013 and 2014, I had needed to give up running and move on to cycling. David gave me lots of advice and I found that cycling brought great joy. David was always a far better cyclist than I, but he always encouraged me (all those kudos on Strava!). Our families met in Santa Fe in 2016 and 2021 for the Santa Fe Century. He of course did the century ride both times, while I settled for shorter distances. But we and our families enjoyed catching up and eating our way through fantastic Santa Fe cuisine.
As I said, David was a friend for 42 years. I even shared a phone call with him on May 7, just a couple of days before his passing. I am deeply saddened by his loss, but am incredibly grateful for such a long and rewarding friendship.

I first met Dave when we both were solo riding over Squaw/Juniper Pass and were at the store there just before you go on Mount Evan's Road. He had recently undergone heart surgery and was so happy to be out doing a hard ride again. I recently had a pacemaker implant and was also out there proving to myself that I could still ride hard climbs and we discussed what it was like to be a cyclist who had heart issues.
Soon after that Dave started showing up at our HRCC rides and rode with him countless times and I got to know him outside of cycling as well. He gave to the community, was an advocate for cycling, as well as several other things, SSPRD, Bike MS, and most of all, was just an all-around great person. He will be missed by all who know him and he will ride with us forever more in our hearts.

I met D.L. (as I refer to him) through cycling with HRCC (Highland Ranch Cycling Club) but unbeknownst found out D.L. was a neighbor of mine here in Lone Tree's West Village. D.L. and I would always ride home together from the weekend HRCC rides. D.L. would point out SSPRD upgrades and the new trails being built for cyclists. We'd talk about family, California, bike tech, and engineering marvels. After spirited rides with HRCC and a return back to Elevation Cycles, I would always find D.L. smiling and speaking with Elevation's customers about biking, safety measures, and how wonderful cycling is in Colorado. I'd approach him and say, "You ready" (as in ready to ride home) and D.L. would look at me and say, "You bet, let's top off our water bottles and ride out". He loved riding and conversating, and I did too. Dave was special. His Bicycle Colorado volunteer work was outstanding and inspired me to give back. I now volunteer at Junior Achievement teaching high school juniors and seniors Financial Literacy & Investing Strategies. D.L. was 15 yrs my senior and the last 4 seasons rode mostly with the HRCC Legends group on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He did grace us with his presence on the HRCC team rides on Saturdays and Sundays quite often and I'd coast alongside him and ask questions about Poker hands and what tops what...I don't know much about Poker but D.L. would always make me feel as if my questions were important even if I got the name of the hands wrong. He will be missed. Every time I set out to ride my Cervelo S5 (D.L. had a Cervelo S3) I will think of him as I leave Lone Tree towards the bike shop to meet up with the other HRCC riders or on a self-paced training ride. D.L. will be with me - out and back to Lone Tree, in the manner of, each time I see an SSPRD sign or ride their trails I will think of D.L. and all of the charity efforts he made to make cycling safer, enjoyable, and fun in the South Metro Denver corridor. There is a pedestrian bridge (The Leaf Bridge) here in Lone Tree that unites the North side of Lone Tree with the South side of Lone Tree and helps pedestrians cross Lincoln Ave safely. D.L. called me up the morning of the grand opening and said, "Let's ride our bikes to the Grand Opening, and be the first cyclists to ever cross the bridge", I said, "Let's do it" and we did. The mayor of Lone Tree took a picture of us and put it in the Lone Tree Lifestyle periodical. I will miss him. R.I.P. Rest In Paradise - D.L.

I was a good friend of David's, and while I most certainly wasn't his best friend, we did a lot together, mostly on two wheels. David was a very generous individual, particularly with his time. I admired greatly his efforts to give back to his community through his service on the board of the SSPRD and his years of work with Bicycle Colorado. But more than that, he was also generous with his friends. When you had a conversation with David, you knew that you always had his full attention and consideration, which may have been why he was so well liked by nearly everyone he came in contact with. He was one of the more genuine and authentic individuals I have come across in my seventy-one years on this planet.
David and I had big plans for the summer, we were going to ride the Santa Fe Century on Sunday, May 21st. Then we were going to ride the "Eddy Rando Steel Classic" on our 30+ year-old classic steel bikes. And as you might expect from David, we were also going to ride the Colorado Bike MS event. We have done this event together on at least four occasions, and we always had a bit of a competition between us over who could raise the most in donations. David always beat me, and by a considerable margin.
David loved cycling and was involved in the sport most of his life. I am not sure if you have looked at his STRAVA page, but it shows that he owns at least four bikes, of which he has ridden a total of 39,399 miles, since 2016. His last ride was this last Tuesday, May 9th, when he rode 43.4 miles in a little over 3 hours. He rode alone that day, which was unusual for David. He usually rode with a number of other retirees, who I believe he had been riding with for close to eight years.
I will miss David, and so will a lot of other people. But he has given us all some very good memories and provided a wonderful example of how to live

I knew David through poker as well.
Very good and tough opponent. Win or lose, had a smile, and sincere congratulations for me in the rare instances where I was able to better him at the table.
Better than all that, a good person. Condolences to the family, thinking of you at this time.

I first "met" Dave on R.G.P. and played poker with him on IRC. We met in person at BARGE 2000, the year of the red hat. I wear mine all the time and it is worn and faded. Dave only brought his out for BARGE and is still in wonderful shape. Later that year Dave invited me to play in his Fish With Chips NLHE tournament. As I recall we had three tables of players in his basement. He even held a Calcutta that year. Dave (with some help from his friends) held that tournament for nearly 10 years, and it grew so large that he had to find venues to hold all of us. Many were held in town home club houses. I believe that's what ended it, was trouble finding a place to hold it.
Anyway, that's what led me to be invited to be an alternate in the Rocky Mountain Oysters home game. I hesitate to call it Dave's home game but I suspect he was the driving force behind it. I was an alternate for many years and saw many regulars come and go but because of my work schedule could not commit to becoming a regular. Even though it was only twice a month for a few hours, we talked about many things besides poker and our friendship grew. Three and a half years ago I retired and became a regular. I look forward to the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month. Even though I am an overall loser in the game I love playing in it. And it all goes back to Dave. His joy, his enjoyment, his willingness to teach, his sense of humor made those games such fun.
Two years ago I got a bike to ride for exercise. Dave asked if he could come out and ride with me. At first I laughed. Why would such an avid cyclist want to ride with a newbie like me. He wanted to help me get started on the right path, figuratively and literally. He loaded his bike on his rack and came out to my house. He brought out a bunch of his old stuff to give to me. A saddle bag, a couple of tire tools, a spare inner tube, a CO2 inflater, a multi-tool, and his old tire pump, all the things a newbie needs but doesn't know that he needs. Right away he saw my tires were low. I had no idea that bike tires will lose pressure and I had been riding for three weeks or so. First lesson learned.
We rode around the neighborhood for a bit and then Dave said "Let's explore." He kept heading down hill and I was dreading the ride back. We get to a park and Dave spots a trail at the far edge. We ride over to it and he says "This will be the base of your rides." I had no idea that trail was there or that all these bike trails even existed. Indeed that trail links up to four other trails that link up to others. For some time most of my rides started on that trail. Later Dave would send me links to trail maps that I still use today. Dave loved cycling and wanted to share that joy and his knowledge with me. That first year I progressed a lot but never got close to his level. We only rode together one more time, but we talked about rides and trails and bikes all the time.
This year Dave had been riding 5 or 6 days a week with rides from 25 to 50 miles. His last ride was Tuesday at 46 miles. That's why the news of his passing was such a shock. I thought Dave would outlive us all. I had a whole list of things to talk with him about at Thursday's game. I am going to miss him. He was taken from us way too soon.
My deepest condolences to Helene and the rest of David's family.
