Obituary of Naomi Thompson

Naomi Esther Thompson was born in Hartford, Connecticut on February 1, 1943 to Rubin and Frieda Wolfe. She was the first of four children whom she loved dearly, and had a wonderful relationship with her grandfather, William Fashinsky. After moving to Brooklyn at an early age, she fell in love with the game of stickball. She also began a lifelong passion for the New York Yankees, which was inspired by her father. In 1960, she graduated with honors from Westbury High School. Naomi was involved in numerous high school sports, and was the top seeded women’s high school tennis player in Nassau County. Naomi received her teaching degree from Queens College. She became a first grade teacher in the Patchogue-Medford School District on Long Island. She embraced innovative methods that enriched the needs of her students and was one of the district’s pioneers in whole language literary instruction. One of the greatest gifts her students received was her recognition of each child’s needs, and her commitment in helping them succeed. Naomi married her husband Ted on May 24, 1975 in Stony Brook, New York. Looking for a new adventure after they retired, they moved to Lafayette, Colorado in 1998, and then eventually settled in Longmont, Colorado in 2002. During her retirement, she dedicated much of her time to helping others by volunteering at Interfaith Quilters of Longmont, and the global women’s organization Zonta International. She also enjoyed reading, the theater, traveling on Road Scholar trips around the world, and spending time with her granddaughters. Naomi is survived by her loving husband Ted, daughter Melanie Goldman (Mitch), siblings Elizabeth Wolfe, Mark Wolfe (Julia), and Debra Schwartz (David), granddaughters Hannah Goldman, and Zoe Goldman. Service, Monday, 1:00PM, Feldman Mortuary Chapel, interment to follow at Mount Nebo Memorial Park. Naomi was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Her sense of humor and contagious laugh will long linger in the hearts of all fortunate enough to have known her.
