Heidi Schnicker posted a condolence

The following email was sent to Public Works employees and cohorts shortly after Randy's death. Dear Colleagues, As many of you already know, our Public Works family suffered a tragic loss this weekend when Randy Schnicker was killed in a skiing accident at Copper Mountain on Sunday, January 17th. Randy was skiing alone on Andy's Encore, a blue trail, and ran into some trees. Even though he was wearing a helmet, he experienced severe head injuries and later died at St. Anthony's Summit Medical Center in Frisco. Randy was 56 years old. We have a great Department because of people like Randy. His loss is already deeply felt among all of us, as Randy was truly dedicated to making Denver a better place to live and work as evidenced by his 29-year career with the Engineering Division. Most recently, Randy was an Engineering Supervisor with Denver Public Works’ Capital Projects Management group at Wastewater, but what I will treasure about Randy the most was his willingness to handle any assignment that we gave him. I always admired Randy’s magnificent trait that allowed us to completely rely on his expertise and professionalism to do a stellar job, no matter how difficult the task. But more importantly, Randy’s legacy with our department is most genuinely expressed by those whom he supervised; who thought of him as a kind mentor who was dedicated to their development and who generously gave of his time and expertise to ensure their success. We are proud to share what we all know about Randy. He was a truly thoughtful and considerate man who possessed a unique wisdom about life and work. He was big hearted and totally dedicated to public service, which set a daily example for all of us. Randy was also very proud of his profession, as exhibited by his involvement in the American Public Works Association (APWA), an organization that he believed contributed to the development and support for engineers. He was currently serving as the VP of the Colorado Chapter of APWA. His accomplishments during his 29 year career are too numerous to mention through this forum, but a great example of his leadership and commitment for bringing people together to resolve problems occurred when he was the City’s lead for the Northeast Metro Win Win Coalition. His efforts in bringing different jurisdictions together to move forward on the 56th Avenue proposal were recognized by the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), which honored Randy and the City with their Local Government Innovation Award. Randy was also loved for his efforts outside of work as well. He was a reliable member of the Denver Employees Volunteer Organization who could be counted on as a volunteer for many different projects. We also knew him as a loving father and husband who spoke often of his family, always noting his pride in them, their activities and their accomplishments. Randy is survived by his wife Heidi, son Andrew (19) and daughter Amy (16), who is a junior at East High School. His family in turn honors his memory, as I was truly moved by their desire to have any donations made in Randy's name to the American Red Cross: Haitian Relief (information below). It is only fitting to Randy’s legacy that even in his loss, the family finds room in their hearts to give to those in need. A service is scheduled for Thursday, January 21, at 3:30pm at Park Hill Congregational Church at 2600 Leyden St., Denver, CO 80207. The church is located in Northeast Denver on the corner of 26th and Leyden -- two blocks west of Monaco Parkway between Montview Blvd (to the south) and Martin Luther King Blvd (to the north). From I-70 take the Monaco exit (south). http://www.parkhillchurch.org/map.htm We seldom think about how meaningful our relationships with our coworkers are to us until we lose them, yet we instinctively know that together we form a magnificent tapestry that allows us to do great things. Randy was a thread to that tapestry that kept us together and focused on providing the greatest service to others. We feel blessed to have had Randy as part of our lives. I know that I speak for all who knew him that we will truly miss him. To commemorate Randy’s life, I am asking that all of our Public Works vehicles turn on their lights on Thursday, January 21. Please feel free to forward this to any other City employees who are inquiring about Randy's arrangements. The American Red Cross International Relief Fund supports those affected by the earthquake in Haiti. You can give to the Fund in Randy’s memory in either of the following ways: Mail a check to: American Red Cross 444 Sherman St. Denver, CO 80203 In the memo of the check write “IRF in memory of Randy Schnicker†Give online: www.coloradoredcross.org/haiti At the bottom of this form there is tribute information, please enter Christine.Downs@denvergov.org where it asks for “recipient email address†and Public Works Manager’s Office will collect the emails and give them to Randy’s family as one large collection.
